SCHUNCK* pavilion heerlen

architecture as background of human activities

this piece of work is about development. creating a changeable space for various also at the moment non defined usings. the pavilion is not representing itself but serves the background for the work of schunk* cultural center. the architectural structur off ers a roofed platform for cultural activities. it can be an enclosed intimitate exhibition cabinet, it can be an outdoor exhibitionwall, it can be a flooding space between inside and the changing surroundings, it can be a stage in a public area, it can be ... the pavilion is sheltered by a raincoat in form of a translucent curtain, backluminated at night, creates a dimly visuality of outside exhibitionparts. at day the curtain is lifted and in a kind a window display for the passers by appears. in the inside various forms of space can be formed by the turning exhibition displays, classic enclosed, passage structures up to totally open space figures.

roughness and proportion

the typology of construction shows simplicity: two grid structures for fl oor and roof, manufactured out of waterproof plywood paneels, steel columns fi xed in the roofgrid and a surrounding curtain for the sheltering and roofi ng with domelights. all materials are rough industrial standards, waterproof plywood paneels for carrier boxes for the wooden grids, plastic curtains for cleanrooms in hospitals, ceiling in acrylic domelights, floorcovering in concretefi xed chipboard. the modularity and simplicity of all construction parts allows easy repairing and in case replacement. in context of transportation the biggest moduls of the pavilion, the exhibition displays, measure 2.40 x 3.00 x 0.12m, the smallest, the standard grid triangles, 0.6 x 1.2m. the roughness of the industrial materials constrats with the distinguished proportions of schunk*pavilion.
